Department store John Lewis had its best week of the year last week, beating last year’s sales by 17%.

Big ticket items showed strong growth, with white goods sales being their highest ever outside the clearance and upholstery having its biggest non-clearance week for two years.

Online sales grew by nearly 50% while 12 stores were up in double digits, Bluewater and Trafford continuing to lead the way with rises of over 20%.

Director of Operational Development Andrew Murphy said the strong week was the result of a concerted effort to ensure the business was in the best possible shape for Christmas. “None of this has happened by accident,” he said.

Sister grocery chain Waitrose continues to be on top form too, with sales up 20.6%. Commercial director Richard Hodgson said customers were shopping for Christmas earlier, with Christmas cracker sales up 32% and Christmas beauty gift sales up nearly 200% on the same week last year.
