First UK grocer to target organic at kids
Asda has become the first British supermarket to sell own-label organic ready meals for children.

The preservative- free foods were devised by the parents of a young girl with autism. The child needed an organic diet to help combat her disability, but her family could not find a suitable ready meal anywhere in Britain.

As a result, the girl's parents formed Pure Organics, a company dedicated to supplying high-quality, healthy, organic meals to specialist outlets. Asda began working with the company last year - and now the entire range - 24 different dishes - will be sold in all stores under its Great Stuff Organics label.

Asda chef Neil Nugent said: 'Busy parents can now choose ready meals which they know contain only top-quality organic food at a price everyone can afford.' Each meal costs£1.78.

Nugent added: 'Neither being rushed for time nor the often high cost of organic food, will any longer prevent mums and dads from choosing to give their children tasty organic food.'

Separately, Asda revealed it is to ditch the CD single format, following deteriorating sales. The grocer, which accounts for 15 per cent of the CD market, is the first retailer to announce this, but it is understood others will follow suit. The chain will stop selling singles as stock runs out and replace them with cut-price albums for less than£8.
