Asda claims record-breaking Xmas sales

Asda broke its Christmas trading record, as 252 of its 265 stores reached sales of at least£1 million over the seven days to December 25.

The grocer did not disclose detailed profit and sales figures for the period, but said all 12 of its category-killing Supercentres generated more than£3 million in sales. The Supercentres in Minworth, near Sutton Coldfield, and Havant in Hampshire were the top performers, each taking more than£4 million in the week.

A total of 113 Asda stores - 19 more than last year - took more than£2 million. The busiest day was December 23 when 38 customers a second passed through checkouts.

Sales of the premium Extra Special range were double those of the previous Christmas. Asda also celebrated strong sales of DVD players and digital cameras. A third of all DVD players sold by Asda in 2003 were sold in December and the grocer sold 10 times more digital cameras than it did during Christmas 2002.
