Anya Hindmarch, the designer of handbags and small leather goods, has opened the first of two London stores, on Bond Street.

The 1,500 sq ft (140 sq m) three-floor shop has been designed by consultancy Found Associates and was inspired by old-fashioned haberdashery store fit-outs.

The ground floor has a large number of mirror-fronted drawers along the left-hand side and the central area features dark-wood, museum-style display cabinets. Overhead, an extended oval light fitting is recessed into the ceiling and the floor uses black and white marble tiles arranged in a harlequin pattern.

The bulk of the ground floor is devoted to handbags, with a small shoe department at the far end. In addition to the glazed drawers on the perimeter, mirrors are deployed across all three floors to create the illusion of depth in what is a narrow shop.

Downstairs, the smaller basement floor has the same fixtures and fittings and is used to house some of the bespoke pieces that are available in the range. The first floor has yet to be stocked, but comprises several connected rooms.

The second Anya Hindmarch store, a 2,000 sq ft (185 sq m) flagship, is due to open on Sloane Street at the beginning of December as part of an 18-store global roll-out that is set for completion early next year.

Anya Hindmarch worked with Sainsbury’s in April to produce the£5 “I am not a plastic bag” shopper, which sold out as it hit the grocer’s shelves. The average selling price in the Bond Street store is about£500 and a bespoke crocodile bag is on sale for£6,500.
