Amazon is under pressure to pay corporation tax as a petition, set up by independent bookshop owners, signed by 160,000 people was handed in to Number 10.

Bookshop owners Frances and Kevin Smith said that Amazon’s tax avoidance “undermine local businesses who pay their fair share of UK tax.”

Amazon, along with Google and Starbucks, were slammed by The House of Commons Public Accounts Committee last November. The Committee accused the etail giant of being “totally evasive” about the turnover and profitability of its UK business and claimed it was avoiding UK taxes by reporting European sales through a Luxembourg-based unit.

The Smiths hope the petition would force Amazon to reconsider its UK tax position like Starbucks, which in December said they will be reviewing their tax arrangements.
