Aldi has sold out of its budget Lifetab tablet, which is priced at £80, just 24 hours after it launched in the UK.

The popularity of the grocer’s device follows the success of Tesco’s own-brand £120 Hudl tablet that launched in September, and shows the growing consumer appetite for cheap tablets, according to the FT.

It also opens up a new battlefront for major UK grocers, from whom Aldi has been stealing market share.

Aldi would not confirm how many devices it had sold but Tesco has sold more than 300,000 Hudls and chief executive Philip Clarke said he expects this figure to double over Christmas.

Aldi partnered with electronics firm Medion to release the 7-inch tablet. The Lifetab operates on the Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean system, and has a USB host function as well as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity.
