C-store body claims deregulation will hit small traders
The Association of Convenience Stores (ACS) has hit out at claims by retail lobby group Deregulate that Sunday trading reforms will have no impact on small traders.

ACS has submitted evidence to the DTI to support its position over the negative impact that longer trading hours would have on non-supermarket retailers in the grocery sector.

It said Sunday accounts for 17 per cent of weekly shop turnover and that the majority of retailers report increased turnover and value of goods purchased on Sunday. It added that reform would equate to an average 3 per cent loss in weekly turnover for small retailers.

'We are not surprised that a report written for the big store lobby concludes that changing the law on Sunday trading will not harm small shops,' said ACS chief executive David Rae. 'We hope that Ministers will resist being railroaded by the big retail lobby into thinking that this change would not have a damaging impact on small grocery businesses.'
