Matches Fashion will launch a new retail concept this year, opening an unorthodox retail and events space in a Mayfair townhouse.

The 5,000 sq ft space at 5 Carlos Place will be spread over six floors and will accommodate retail, event and private client functions.

Its lack of tills, shelves and rails means that it will be highly adaptable and will play host to Matches’ year-round ‘in residence’ events, which comprise designer dinners, live-streamed talks and installations.

Adaptable space

Co-founder and co-executive chairman Tom Chapman told the Business of Fashion: “We’re creating a space where nothing is fixed.

“So [if] we’re talking about event dressing, all of Carlos Place will be turned into event dressing. We’re talking about vacation, we’ll turn it all into vacation … It’ll be constantly changing and evolving.

5 Carlos Place will open this autumn and will be the retailer’s sixth London site, in addition to its private shopping townhouse and four stores.

Luxuriating in profit

Matches revealed soaring sales and profits in its last full years.

The etailer said EBITDA grew more than five-fold to £19m, while sales surged 61% to £204m in the year ending January 31.

Both domestic and overseas markets registered strong years, with UK growth up 45% and the rest of the world rising 80%.
