Retailer to offer discount travel through web site
Woolworths is aiming to shake up the travel industry with the launch of its first online travel agency today.

The retailer will sell discount holidays, flights and hotel rooms in partnership with travel specialist PPA Group through Woolworths.co.uk.

The site has savings of up to 60 per cent on hotel rooms, discounted flights and special deals on family holidays from big tour operators. It will compete with online travel specialists such as Expedia.co.uk and Lastminute.com.

Special offers to celebrate its launch include a three-day city break in New York for£492, a return flight to Dubai for£241 and a return flight to Las Vegas for£298.

The launch is part of wider online expansion plans for Woolworths. The variety retailer has already extended its reach beyond its traditional products, including selling discounted new cars online.

Woolworths marketing director Stephen Robertson said: 'The online travel market is booming and we believe we can offer customers looking to travel the best of both worlds - a trusted retail brand working with an expert in the market. People may not expect to find Woolies selling holidays, but our web offer is expanding at a rapid pace and offering many non-traditional Woolworths products at market-beating prices.'

Woolworths will market the site in its 821 high street stores and will use its existing consumer advertising spend to publicise the site. A spokesman for the chain said that if the web site proved to be successful, Woolworths would consider expanding travel sales beyond the internet. This could include an in-store travel offer.
