Acquisition could be deemed unfair
The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) is understood to be investigating Woolworths' acquisition of book wholesaler Bertram Group.

The OFT is considering whether the purchase will significantly reduce competition in the book wholesaling sector. If the regulator finds against Woolworths, it will refer the case to the Competition Commission.

Woolworths' entertainment wholesaling subsidiary Entertainment UK (EUK) paid£29 million for Bertram Group in January this year, with the aim of expanding its domestic and international book sales.

Bertram Group is a leading wholesaler and distributor of books to libraries, schools, universities and educational institutions in the UK and around the world.
