The coffee shop will be located after security but before duty-free, with the travel retailer saying it will offer “barista-made coffee and a breakfast and brunch-led menu”.

Grindsmith is a pre-existing Mancunian brand, which previously had stores in Media City and Ancoats. WHSmith already has a pre-existing food-to-go brand called Smith’s Family Kitchen

Alongside the coffee store will be a travel essentials store, which will have a “strong Manchester feel” the company said, with exposed brick finishes and a tailored range of products.

The larger John Lennon Airport store, described as a one-stop shop, will offer the company’s full category and product range as well as gifts and souvenirs unique to Liverpool. The design will be inspired by the northern city, including a recreation of the Liver Building on the ceiling.

“Manchester and Liverpool are airports that millions of people across the north pass through every year. These openings, including our first artisan coffee shop, reflect our confidence in the region and our commitment to making every journey better,” said WHSmith interim group chief executive Andrew Harrison.

“We’re so excited that WHSmith has brought Manchester’s own Grindsmith to the airport, alongside its new store,” said Manchester Airport chief commercial officer Stephen Turner. “It means passengers departing from Terminal 2 have even more options as they prepare for their trips and a local brand has been helped to reach a global audience.”
