Store giant plans openings and refurbishments
Global leader Wal-Mart is continuing its rapid expansion programme, with 1,500 more stores planned for the coming years.

Wal-Mart head of US stores John Menzer said the retailer is on track to meet its stated target of between 335 and 370 store openings in the US this year, after opening 341 shops last year.

'We are really focused on opening new stores right now. We see so many opportunities to open new stores that that's where our capital is going first,' he said. He did not give a timeframe for the expansion programme.

Wal-Mart opened 69 stores in January, a company record for a single month. Menzer said that 1,800 of Wal-Mart's existing Supercenters in the US will be remodelled over the next 18 months to make them more inviting, adding embellishments such as faux wood floors, wider aisles and digital television display walls.

The refurbishment programme is part of a broader strategy to entice consumers to buy more fashion, electronics, home furnishings and premium foods.
