Waitrose unveiled its first overseas store last week at the Dubai Mall with a design based on a market concept.
The 53,820 sq ft store – a joint venture with local operator Fine Fare Food Market – is the blueprint for the grocer’s roll-out across the Middle East and North Africa.

Designed by Kinnersley Kent Design, the store features butcher, baker, fishmonger and flower shop-in-shops, as well as a separate pork shop for non-muslims. Ready meals are not stocked, because there is a cultural suspicion about pre-prepared food.

The store also features locally sourced food and homewares from John Lewis.
