Value fashion retailer Primark has posted a video interview online in which director Breege O’Donoghue is interviewed about last night’s Panorama child labour exposé.

No Primark directors appeared on the BBC programme, although the retailer provided an extensive statement to the broadcaster.

Primark’s online video, in which O’Donoghue is subjected to a journalistic-style interrogation, is a break with tradition for the store group whose leaders do not typically speak in public.

In the interview, O’Donoghue restates many of the points made already by the retailer, but the personal delivery of the message by a director, who appears furious about what has happened, is unprecedented.

O’Donoghue, describing herself as “very angry”, insists it was right for Primark to axe the factories that subcontracted work which was then undertaken by children.

She says: “They deceived us. There was no trust. The relationship was broken.”
