The value retailer has announced plans to bolster its presence on UK high streets by taking over former M&Co stores.

The Original Factory Shop (TOFS) is set to open 16 stores in the next three months.

The retailer said the expansion would “assert its position as the UK’s leading community and value, brand-led retailer”, against the backdrop of tough times in retail.

Several new stores will occupy former M&Co sites in major towns and high streets, following the collapse of the fashion chain earlier this year.

The move will create up to 160 jobs across the UK, including store assistant, store management and supervisor roles.

TOFS managing director Phil Brigg says: “Our investment in new store openings is about making sure we have the right stores in the right place. We’re identifying catchments where The Original Factory Shop is not represented and that includes a focus on high streets in major towns.

“Our growth is testament to the importance of multi-department stores and the roles they play in helping local communities. These openings will help provide more job opportunities at a time when they are most needed.”

The variety value retailer currently operates 185 stores in small towns across the UK.
