Poundland has extended its online trial to almost 2 million customers as it dials up its ecommerce ambitions.

The value retailer has opened its transactional website to consumers in Birmingham and Walsall, allowing them to buy Poundland items online for the first time.

As previously reported by Retail Week, Poundland lifted the lid on details of its ecommerce trial last summer.

The service spans 2,500 products, but was only initially available to 18,000 Poundland colleagues. The Midlands expansion marks the first time that customers will be able to use the service.

The website will stock products from a range of Poundland’s key categories including grocery, gardening, health and beauty, and homeware.

Online prices will be the same as those in stores, but shoppers using the website will pay a £4 delivery fee on all orders.

A former Poundland store in Cannock will act as the fulfilment centre for online orders, while Hermes has been drafted in to provide last-mile fulfilment.

Poundland retail and transformation director Austin Cooke said: “We’re delighted with this initial phase of testing and we’re now excited to open up Poundland.co.uk to lucky customers in the Midlands where we began life 30 years ago.”

Poundland is already targeting a wider roll-out beyond the Midlands. Cooke added: “As we learn from the pilot, we’ll open up the new service to more of the UK over the year.”
