Tomorrow is expected to be the busiest shopping day of the year as consumers stock up on last-minute Christmas gifts.

Payment business Visa anticipates processing 33 million transactions, amounting to sales of £1.5bn – an 8% year-on-year uplift.

Consumers will spend £1 million per minute and almost £18,000 per second on their Visa cards.

Visa Europe commercial director Dr Steve Perry said: “Consumer spending in the run-up to Christmas has been highly volatile this year, but our data shows that shoppers will eventually embrace the festive season.

“We’ve already seen strong growth in online sales and we expect that the 23rd will be the busiest ever shopping day for the amount of money spent on Visa cards, increasing by 8 per cent compared against last year.”

Although tomorrow will be the busiest shopping day overall, the busiest hour of the year will be between 12 noon and 1 pm on Christmas Eve.
