Third-party tie-ups bolster sales
Confectioner Thorntons has reported a drop in sales for the first 15 weeks of the financial year. Group sales were 4.8 per cent below last year and own-shop like-for-like sales were down by 4.4 per cent.

The retailer blamed the poor performance on the general state of the UK retail climate. However, sales of branded product to retailers, such as Sainsbury's, Tesco and Woolworths, were up 1 per cent in the same period.

The group hopes Christmas trading will bolster sales. The festive period historically accounts for 60 per cent of Thorntons' six-month sales.
