The Pier to trial concessions in Homebase

Homewares and furniture retailer The Pier is to open concessions in two Homebase branches next month.

The Pier will launch a 325 sq m outlet in Homebase's Livingston store, and a 280 sq m concession at Southport, selling its range of accessories, furnishing and textiles. The concessions are The Pier's first.

The Pier managing director Alison Richards, who recently sold her stake in the homewares business to controlling US shareholder Pier 1, said: 'Homebase gives us the opportunity to trade where we don't traditionally have stores.'

A spokeswoman for The Pier added that while the concessions are an 'important additional sales channel', the retailer will continue to focus primarily on opening in standalone high street locations.

It has not yet been decided how many Pier concessions will eventually open in Homebase stores.

'These are very much being seen as a trial, so no future numbers are being confirmed at the moment,' the spokeswoman said.

Homebase operates 300 stores. Fashion and furnishings retailer Laura Ashley and electricals chain PowerHouse both have concessions in its stores.

Last month, PowerHouse disclosed it plans to have between 20 and 30 concessions in the DIY group's shops within the next year.

At the moment, The Pier trades from 23 high street stores across the UK, and operates mail order and a profitable online businesses.
