All eyes are going to be on George Osborne delivering the budget today; but retailers should also take note of what’s being debated in the European Parliament.

The proposed Consumer Rights Directive is being billed as a major update to Europe’s consumer rights legislation, and aims to create more uniform protection for consumers across the EU when they buy goods or services.

The directive is to be debated today, before being put to a vote on Thursday. In particular, the draft version sets out harmonised consumer rights for online and distance selling; the idea being that consumers should have more confidence about buying products from other countries online.

However groups such as IMRG and EMOTA - the European Ecommerce and Mail Order Trade Association – have voiced concerns about the draft proposals. Many UK retailers are now benefiting from increased online sales by opening up their sites to international customers. Ensuring that any legislation resulting from this Directive does not disadvantage them is crucial.
