The Mall has submitted a £150 million proposal to Luton Borough Council to extend its shopping centre in the town.

The proposal seeks to extend The Mall Arndale in Luton by a further 400,000 sq ft (37,160 sq m), taking it to a total of 1.2 million sq ft (111,480 sq m). The extension to the centre, which is anchored by Debenhams, will include further retail space alongside offices, apartments and modernised parking facilities.

It will also provide greater access through the centre to George Street and St George’s Square.

The move is part of the council’s wider scheme to revitalise Luton town centre, which would integrate The Mall Arndale with the railway and bus stations.

The Mall chief executive Ken Ford said: “We have been working hard with Luton Council to look at how we might best improve the relationship of the centre with the rest of the town.

“Our proposals offer the best solution for Luton, providing a larger, brighter and more modern shopping environment where retailers will want to take space and shoppers will want to spend time.”

The Mall has also secured TK Maxx to anchor its St George’s Square element of the development. The retailer will take a 38,000 sq ft (3,530 sq m) store at the£20 million scheme.

St George’s Square was granted planning permission earlier this year and will remodel the St George’s Square end of the centre. Construction is expected to start in early 2008 for completion in autumn 2009.
