Tesco chief executive Sir Terry Leahy took home more than £5.4 million last year – an increase of 18.5 per cent.

The supermarket boss received a salary of£1.3 million, share bonuses of£2.9 million, cash bonuses of£1.2 million and benefits of£95,000 the retailer’s annual report and accounts showed.

The pay and benefits of Tim Mason, the former marketing director who is now leading the development of Tesco’s fledgling Fresh & Easy chain in the US, rose from£3.77 million to£4.53 million.
