Tesco has come up trumps according to the UK’s first ever Climate Brand Index, which tracks consumer perception year on year of how companies are acting on climate change.

However, almost 70 per cent of consumers asked were unable to name a leading brand on climate change without prompting.

The research also revealed a gap between what consumers want and expect from retailers and what they think companies are doing about it. The Co-operative Group, Marks & Spencer and Sainsbury’s were in the top five retailers.

The study said consumers are choosing brands for environmental reasons and more people are making environmentally friendly choices on a day-to-day basis, from choosing an energy tariff to buying their everyday shopping.

David Hall, international campaign director of The Climate Group’s Together campaign, said: “Consumers want to act on climate change and expect their favourite brands to make it easier for them.”

The Climate Group’s Together campaign was launched in April. It brings together some of the UK’s top brands in trying to help consumers make a positive impact on climate change.
