Grocery giant Tesco plans to launch a high street assault with a chain of department store-type shops that would compete with retailers such as Debenhams and Marks & Spencer.

The first store – described in its marketing material as “a whole new concept” – will open on the site of an existing shop at High Wycombe in Buckinghamshire. It will carry ranges including food, clothing, homewares, electricals and toys.

The chain would complement Tesco’s Extra out-of-town hypermarket stores.

A Tesco spokesman said the high street store did not represent a new format.
