Tokyo store will be first of up to 35
The UK's biggest supermarket Tesco is to open its first supermarket under the Tesco fascia in Japan next week as it drives further expansion into overseas markets.

The Tesco Express convenience store will launch in Tokyo and will be the first of up to 35 Tesco-branded stores the grocer plans to launch in Japan this year.

The retailer operates more than 100 supermarkets in Japan under the name Tsurukame, but this will be the first time it has opened a store under the Tesco fascia.

The supermarket giant will compete against convenience store market leaders 7-Eleven and Lawsons in Japan.

Tesco employs more than 3,000 people in Japan, where it bought value supermarket group C Two-Network four years ago.

This week, the retailer unveiled record pre-tax profits, up 20.3 per cent to£2.55 billion on a comparable basis for the 52 weeks to February 24.

Group sales also soared 10.9 per cent to£46.6 billion.
