Initiative capitalises on broadband boom
Tesco is to expand its computer offer in stores, tripling its range and introducing top brands as it attempts to battle PC World and grab a bigger share of the£1 billion market.

The UK's number one retailer will launch the expanded range in June at 50 of its Extra stores. The initiative aims to capitalise on the broadband boom as high-speed internet access becomes cheaper, fuelling demand for PCs.

Brands such as Samsung, Toshiba and Acer will be included in the range, which will span laptops and desktops ranging from entry-level products to the latest wi-fi-enabled machines.Prices will start at less than£300, rising to£800 for the top models.

Customers buying a desktop PC will be able to choose from a selection of monitors, with six TFT flatscreen options available.

The supermarket giant will display the range in powered units that will enable shoppers to test the functionality of the PCs before they buy.

Tesco PC buyer Matt Roberts said the sector presents 'a real growth opportunity' for Tesco.

The retailer is also strengthening its PC accessories offer, rolling it out to 150 stores and moving into areas such as wireless networking, external hard drives and memory cards. It will also expand its printer and scanner offer.

Roberts added that Tesco may roll out the PC range to more stores by the end of the year.
