Organic ranges star performers
Tesco unveiled record sales over Christmas and the new year, with UK like-for-likes up 5.9 per cent in the six weeks to January 6.

Including petrol, UK sales increased 8.3 per cent, with like-for-likes up 5.4 per cent and 2.9 per cent from net new space.

The company reported a record year in many non-food categories, including toys and games, electronics and clothing.

Sales of fresh organic foods were up 39 per cent, with sales of its Finest range of meat and poultry rocketing more than 55 per cent.

Tesco Extra and Express stores achieved strong sales growth. Tesco.com, including Tesco Direct, had a successful Christmas, with total sales up by more than 30 per cent to more than£150 million - with nearly 2 million orders delivered over the six-week period. The grocery team had their busiest Christmas ever, delivering more than 14 million items.

Group sales (excluding petrol) rose 9.9 per cent in the six-week period and increased 9.5 per cent (including petrol). International sales rose 15.8 per cent.
