Tesco has unveiled price cuts worth £170 million and claimed that this takes its total cost reductions to nearly £600 million since January.

The UK’s biggest supermarket promised to deliver the savings on products ranging from fresh food and healthcare to baby care yesterday, ahead of the Chancellor’s budget today.

The initiative came as Tesco revealed that more than a quarter of householders feel their finances have got worse this year, with more than half citing worries as a result of household bills.

Tesco commercial director Richard Brasher said: “Millions of families around the country are struggling to cope with higher mortgage costs and rising energy bills. Higher taxes in today’s budget will hit them hard. They will be looking to us to help them balance their own budget.”

The 5,000 price reductions will kick in this week. Tesco said that it has reduced 7,500 prices this year, saving customers about£400 million in less than three months.
