Tesco has added menswear to its online clothing offer in an initiative that will turn the screws on its value fashion rivals.

Today, the world’s third-largest retailer launched a range of formalwear, knitwear, jackets, shirts, footwear, tops, jeans and trousers for its Cherokee, F&F, F&F Signature and Stone Bay brands online.

The launch follows a successful pilot of womenswear, which launched in November (Retail Week, September 28).

Tesco’s online foray into mens- and womenswear may pile the pressure on competitors such as Primark and Asda's George, which do not yet sell clothes online. Asda is expected to launch George on its web site before the end of this summer.

Tesco said in an e-mail to customers: “We're following the success of our online fashion store for women with a brand new store now open for men's fashion.” Customers order the clothes on Tesco Direct, the grocer's non-food web and catalogue business.
