Grocery giant Tesco is piloting a handyman services scheme in Swindon and may replicate it nationwide if successful.

Tesco Home Services is being run in association with accredited local tradesmen in fields such as roofing, heating and glazing, The Sun newspaper reported.

Tesco home services director Rob Brown said: “We are giving people in Swindon the confidence that what they receive will be good value and reliable.”

Customers ring a central number, work is divided among the handymen and Tesco takes a cut.

The venture was launched earlier this month, backed by a flyer sent to 180,000 homes, and will put Tesco in competition with companies such as Homeserve and British Gas which offer home repair services.
