A man who tried to extort £1 million from grocery giant Tesco has been jailed for six years.

Philip McHugh, 52, a former tax inspector from Clitheroe, Lancashire, last year pleaded guilty to three sample charges of blackmail and two of communicating a bomb hoax.

His threats led to the precautionary closure of 14 Tesco stores last July in England, Scotland and Wales. McHugh twice demanded£500,000 from the grocer.
