UK's largest retailer contrite but resolute
Tesco has sent out a statement apologising to residents, commuters and businesses affected by the tunnel collapse at Gerrards Cross.

The retailer promised financial support to Chiltern Railways' passenger compensation scheme and to compensate business tenants of Chiltern Railways who have lost trade as a result of the collapse.

The retailer said: 'We recognise that every day the line remains closed it causes serious disruption to many commuters and local residents, and we apologise for this. However, while we are working with the authorities as quickly as possible, safety has to be our first priority.'

Tesco stressed that while repairs to the tunnel are taking place, no work is being done on the development of the store site. It is understood that once the tunnel is rebuilt, work will recommence on the store, contrary to press reports saying that the project may be cancelled.

The retailer refused to comment on earlier reports that the reparations to the tunnel would cost it up to£20 million.
