1 million fewer bags used in less than a week
Tesco has hailed its scheme to cut carrier bag use a success, as 1 million fewer carrier bags are used in just 3 days.

Launched on Monday, the scheme rewards clubcard holders for every plastic bag they do not use, encouraging shoppers to fill up their own bags or reuse old carrier bags as an alternative. So far the supermarket has given out 1 million green clubcard points.

Tesco aims to cut the number of bags it hands out by 25 per cent over the next two years - the equivalent of 1 billion fewer bags a year. All of Tesco's carrier bags will be degradable by the end of September.

Group corporate and legal affairs director Lucy Nevile-Rolfe said: 'This scheme is the first time that UK shoppers have been financially rewarded for not using carrier bags. The results so far show that this approach works and that people want to do their bit for the environment, especially if it is made easier for them.'

The initiative is supported by a TV ad campaign featuring celebrities such as Frankie Dettori, Martine McCutcheon, Ronnie Corbett and Paul Daniels, as well as at point of sale in-store.
