Supermarket group Tesco is to reduce the weight of wine bottles to cut their environmental impact.
By 2010 the grocer aims to save 72,000 tonnes of glass by cut the weight of bottles by 25 per cent.
Tesco category technical manager for beers wines and spirits Andy Gale said: “Advances in glass making technology means we can make savings of greater than 30 per cent per bottle in some cases.
“Lightweight bottles also bring other environmental benefits in the form of reduced energy requirements for manufacture and transport."
The scheme is being run with own-label producer Kingsland Wines and Spirits and its glass manufacturer Quinn Glass. A trial delivered a reduction of 2,600 tonnes of glass per year.
Tesco has been working with advisory body, Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP). Andy Dawe, WRAP's head of retail programmes, said: "The project is an important part of WRAP's work with leading retailers and manufacturers to demonstrate that packaging can be optimised without affecting consumer perception or product quality.”
