Tesco will call on the Prime Minister today to create new laws to ban the sale of cut-price alcohol.

The retailer wants legislation to “ensure responsible pricing on alcohol” as concern grows over crime fuelled by drunken disorder.

Tesco wants the Government to take the lead on the issue, because the supermarket is unable to discuss an industry-wide price hike under competition laws.

Tesco chief executive Sir Terry Leahy has met with Gordon Brown to discuss ways to tackle anti-social behaviour and underage drinking.

The grocer was recently criticised for selling cans of lager for less than the price of bottled water.
