Eight cash and carry stores purchased
Tesco has bought the Makro cash and carry business in Malaysia for an undisclosed sum.

The supermarket said the move would help them strengthen it's business in Malaysia, with the eight Makro stores nearly doubling the company's floor space in the country. The stores are in prime sites and total over 800,000 sq ft (74,320 sq m) of sales area.

The supermarket has been pushing for expansion outside the UK, but with some setbacks.

Indian conglomerate Bharti Enterprises last week signed an agreement to open Wal-Mart stores in India, dealing a massive blow to Tesco's plans to enter the Indian market.

Tesco had been the frontrunner to win the contract with Bharti, but talks are understood to have faltered over differing views about how quickly stores should open.

Tesco revealed on Tuesday that revenue from its international business increased 17.9 per cent in the third quarter and it has announced plans to open 300 more stores outside the UK.
