US union launches campaign against grocer
The United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW), a US union, has launched a campaign against Tesco, claiming the retailer promotes underage drinking.

Union members delivered leaflets to homes in Phoenix, Arizona, urging residents to 'protect your family'. UFCW wants the State Liquor Board to reject Tesco's licensing application for its Fresh and Easy stores, which are slated to open later this year. These will be Tesco's first stores in the US.

The flyer said: 'Tesco is currently facing numerous investigations in Britain for selling alcohol to minors.'

The campaign highlights the one-month ban three Tesco stores received in February after they were caught selling alcohol to 15-year-olds during an undercover police investigation. A spokesman for Tesco said the leaflets referred to a one-off incident.

However, it is thought the union's protest is part of a wider campaign to ensure Tesco workers in the US will get recognised union representation. Rival Wal-Mart does not recognise its workers' union.
