Tesco has sold 35,000 Hudl tablets in the first two days since its launch on Monday and the retailer is expected to be short on stock next week as a result.
Chief executive Philip Clarke told Retail Week: “We sold more than we thought and may be short on stock into next week but it’s a good sign going into Christmas.”
Clarke said: “So many of our customers and colleagues don’t have tablets so the Hudl is an affordable choice.”
Nick Lansley, head of research and development at Tesco, said last week at the Retail Week Technology Summit that Tesco’s Hudl venture is both about the device itself and the services it offers. “The price means it is affordable to more people and the fact it links to Tesco’s other services gives customers more reasons to shop with us,” he said.
