WHSmith has been targeted in a cyberattack where hackers have accessed company data including information on past and present employees.

The high street retailer said trading activities have not been affected by the breach, and that customer accounts and customer databases are on separate systems that haven’t been impacted.

WHSmith said: “Upon becoming aware of the incident, we immediately launched an investigation, engaged specialist support services and implemented our incident response plans, which included notifying the relevant authorities.

“WHSmith takes the issue of cybersecurity extremely seriously and investigations into the incident are ongoing.

“We are notifying all affected colleagues and have put measures in place to support them.”

The news comes after a wave of cyberattacks against other UK companies, such as Royal Mail and JD Sports.
