Online retail giant The Hut Group (THG) has established a £10m coronavirus aid package to support vulnerable communities, key workers and emergency services.

Half of the cash will be spent in Manchester, where THG is based, and the rest will be directed elsewhere in the UK and to the etailer’s international markets.

THG will make an immediate donation of £1m, split between the Manchester Lord Mayor’s and Greater Manchester Mayor’s charities, which will assist in addressing problems such as homelessness.

The other £4m comprises “critical products and services, which are currently in acute shortage across the world”, which will be distributed to groups such as frontline NHS staff and affected communities overseas in markets where THG trades.

The retailer has recently taken on 500 extra manufacturing and distribution staff in the UK, Europe, Asia and the USA “to meet rapidly increased global online demand” for products such as for vitamins, supplements, personal care and hygiene products in its sites such as Myprotein.

The business has turned over part of its manufacturing capability to produce hand sanitisers and will distribute it free to those in need.

Founder and chief executive Matthew Moulding said: “These are unprecedented times and THG has an obligation to support those in need, not only as a major regional employer but because we have the ability to do so. Everyone at THG wants to help in any way they can. Manchester and the surrounding areas are our home and we have a huge sense of loyalty to the local community.”

Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham said: “This shows Greater Manchester business at its best. These are challenging times for us all and it means so much to see one of our most successful home-grown companies stepping forward and giving back to our communities. The Hut Group’s support will enable us to provide better support to homeless people as well as recognise the selfless work of our NHS staff and other frontline workers.”
