Music streaming service Spotify is taking on download giant iTunes with a new application that would allow iPhone users to listen to millions of songs on the move.

The application, which Spotify has submitted to Apple for approval, could be running within weeks.

Users will have to subscribe to the service for £9.99 a month but can offer endless streaming on a large number of songs directly from the internet.

Spotify founder Daniel Ek said: “We have a great relationship with Apple and, think the iPhone is awesome and absolutely expect them to approve the app in the next few weeks.”

Analysts believe however that there is still a chance that Apple will reject the application because it could rival its own iTunes music download service.
