An airport retail specialist has become the first retailer to subscribe to Amazon’s cashier-less store technology, which the etail giant has begun offering to other businesses.

OTG, which runs food and beverage business Cibo Express Gourmet Markets, will start using Amazon’s ‘Just Walk Out’ technology from next week.

The first branch to offer the service will be in Newark Liberty Airport Terminal C in the USA, to be followed by more branches at that airport and LaGuardia.

Shoppers enter the store using their credit cards, pick what they want and then simply leave without the need to queue.

OTG chief executive Rick Blatstein said the technology ”promises to revolutionise the airport experience for travellers”.

He added: “We’re incredibly proud to be integrating Amazon’s Just Walk Out technology into the OTG airport experience. OTG has always embraced technology as a means of optimising the airport experience so that we can give our guests their time back. By using the world’s most advanced shopping technology in our Cibo Express Gourmet Markets, we’re doing just that by putting our guests in full control of their time.”

Amazon physical retail and technology vice president Dilip Kumar said: “We’ve found that shoppers truly appreciate checkout-free retail experiences, so we’re thrilled to be working with an innovative company like OTG to bring our proven Just Walk Out technology to their airport stores.

“Starting next week, travellers will no longer have to assess store lines to determine if they can quickly grab that snack, bottle of water or travel essential they need before their flight. We can’t wait to hear how travellers like the experience.”

OTG describes itself as ”one of the leading airport food and beverage operators in North America” and has around 350 restaurants and stores in 10 airports.
