The amount spent on luxury goods by Indian shoppers visiting the UK has grown 89% year-on-year.
Research by Global Blue, which operates tax-free shopping services, found India is among several emerging markets favouring high end fashion. However, the study showed that Indian visitors are still purchasing from the high street, which showed a 46% increase in transactions.
Shoppers from Malaysia and Thailand are also increasing their spend on luxury goods, with the growth in the sector increasing 50% and 51% respectively, according to the research which was collected from over 15,000 stores from June 2009 to June 2010.
Jill McArdle, head of marketing at Westfield London, said: “We have seen significant footfall from the Indian tourist market during the summer period in The Village, and specific brands that have experienced strong sales from Indian tourists holidaying in the capital, are Ferragamo, Miu Miu, Prada and Jimmy Choo. Ferragamo and Miu Miu saw strong sales in handbags and scarves and Prada and Miu Miu saw strong sales in handbags.”
McArdle added: “Our luxury stores have also reported that the Indian market is currently buying up next season’s collection of autumn/winter stock and we expect to see sales from India to continue to increase from the high spending Indian market.”
