Health and beauty retailer Superdrug is to ramp up its pharmacy credentials with the launch of travel clinics next week.

In partnership with CitiDoc, Superdrug will be the first pharmacy to offer travel vaccinations on the high street in 17 of its pharmacy stores, including Cambridge, Edinburgh and Guildford.

“Our pharmacies are all about convenience and accessibility, and the launch of our travel clinics is adding to this,” said Superdrug head of pharmacy Martin Crisp.

“Sometimes people forget all about having their jabs before they go on holiday, or don’t even realise they need them for some countries. Our solution is to offer a one-stop shop where shoppers can come to the clinic at the same time as getting holiday essentials such as suncream.”

The retailer will trial the service with a view to rolling it out to its 213 pharmacy stores. The Superdrug web site has been updated and a pamphlet listing its pharmacy services will go into stores next week. The travel clinic will sit alongside its existing pharmacy services such as allergy testing, flu vaccinations and mole screening.

Crisp added that the travel clinics will be “priced competitively” and that the service will set it apart from high street rivals such as Boots, which does not offer travel vaccinations. Supermarket Sainsbury’s is piloting travel vaccinations across several stores.

Superdrug is also working with CitiDoc to launch sexual health screenings, such as Chlamydia tests, early next year. It will also trial HIV testing later this year.

“We have a young audience and we need to be aware that sometimes they find it embarrassing to go to their normal GP when talking about things like sexual health,” said Crisp.

“If we can provide a drop-in service, it gives our customers the anonymity they need with the same care and advice as their local doctor.”

Crisp added that the pharmacy stores had seen a “significant uplift” in recent months as customers seek medical advice and help at their own convenience.
