There will be those who are inclined to say that the days of the high street computer game retailer are over, and that this category has become an integral part of the online world and we won’t see its physical like again.

Yet visit the temporary mall that is Boxpark, in London’s Shoreditch, and the latest addition to the retail panorama is an Xbox shop.

Opened just two weeks ago, this is the first, and indeed the only one of its kind in the world, according to a member of staff. And it is supposed not only to engender enthusiasm for the Microsoft-owned brand but to act as a hub for Xbox enthusiasts where they can enjoy events and take part in competitions - a Fifa 13 challenge is due to begin shortly.

What this small shop does not do is foster the kind of young(ish) male gamer environment that was off-putting to many shoppers in the past. Instead, this is a carefully designed green looking interior with chairs and consoles, where Xbox fans can play to their hearts’ content.

In terms of location, this looks a good one for Xbox, as Boxpark, particularly at the weekend, tends to attract a relatively well-heeled and highly fashion-conscious young crowd for whom computer games are an everyday part of the landscape. It is also staffed by knowledgeable young men who are part of retailer Game, with whom Microsoft has partnered on the Boxpark project.

This is a pop-up store, like many in this container mall, but the agreement is that it will be in place for a year, meaning that this will become a fairly familiar part of the scenery in this neck of the woods.
