Sportswear retailer JD Sports is heading up the latest batch of retailers to sign up to Friars Walk shopping centre in Newport.

JD will take a 6,000 sq ft unit at the retail and leisure development, which is one of four large shopping centres set to open in the UK this year.

The retailer will be joined at Friars Walk by Occasions Cards, Danish jewellery specialist Pandora and the Candle Company when the centre opens on November 12.

They are the latest stores to sign up to the 390,000 sq ft mall, which is being developed by Queensberry Real Estate, following the arrivals of Debenhams, Next, H&M, Topshop, River Island and New Look.

Its leisure offer will be spearheaded by an eight-screen Cineworld cinema and 11 restaurants including Nando’s, Frankie & Benny’s, Chiquito, Gourmet Burger Kitchen, Prezzo and TGI Friday’s.

‘Extremely positive news’

Queensberry Real Estate commercial director and co-founder Stuart Harris said: “With just over three months until we open it is extremely positive news for the city to be able to announce the next tranche of new signings for Friars Walk.

“These are great names to have coming to Friars Walk. It’s an exciting time for the city and a busy time for us – we have around 400 people working on site and the build is moving ahead at pace with fit outs already underway for Debenhams and Cineworld with more commencing over the summer weeks.”

Four Sites

Friars Walk is among the four new shopping centres featured in Retail Week’s Four Sites documentary web series – alongside Grand Central Birmingham, Bradford Broadway and Flemingate, in Beverley.

The series explores how developers have taken unique approaches towards design, the retail leisure mix and the use of technology, while also looking at the impact the shopping centres will have on their wider communities.
