Maternity specialist Mothercare has opened its first two revamped stores under the direction of new chief executive Mark Newton-Jones.

The new-look Mothercare stores, in Solihull and Gateshead, are the first to be rolled out by the retailer as it works to modernise its store estate and shutter underperforming shops.

The store’s travel section, which includes pushchairs and prams, features reconfigured fixtures, with a lighter and brighter atmosphere.

It is easier to navigate, with better signposting and separate areas for each brand.

The retailer has created a more differentiated space for its maternitywear, with new lighting, fixtures and flooring, while mum’s, new born, baby and younger children’s clothing are in distinct areas.

A mezzanine area features the store’s cafe, toy store and soft play area. The playground includes slides, climbing equipment and a ball pit.
