Whole Foods Market, which is owned by Amazon, has opened its first online-only store in Brooklyn, New York.

The store, which opened on September 1, will be used exclusively to fulfil online orders for customers in the Brooklyn area.

The concept has been in the works for more than a year. The store layout reflects a generic supermarket, but customers are not able to shop there themselves.

Whole Foods Market has hired hundreds of new employees to operate the store, including some hires from within the company, who will be in charge of shopping for and preparing orders for delivery.

Amazon’s online grocery sales tripled in the second quarter year on year, as more customers turned to its services for food delivery.

Amazon currently offers two-hour grocery delivery in 2,000 cities and towns worldwide, and offers exclusive discounts to Prime members who shop at Whole Foods Market.

The store opening comes as the most recent development of Amazon’s drive into the grocery sector, after it launched its Amazon Fresh supermarket last month.
