Optician Specsavers is to ramp up its presence in London with the opening of 20 stores over the next 18 months.

Specsavers is hunting for stores within the M25 to add to its existing 97 shops in the area. The retailer is also seeking a further five stores across the UK.

As part of the expansion, Specsavers will recruit staff from other retail backgrounds – including fashion, food and electricals–to join its fast-track programme.

The retailer is on the hunt for general, large store, area and regional managers to join its Partner in Development programme. The scheme trains staff over a six- to 12-month period to become joint venture partners and train in optics.

“It’s a myth that the days of opportunities have come and gone,” said Specsavers retail development consultant Dominic Savill.

“Not only are there a wide range of excellent opportunities for retailers in a wide variety of locations, but many practitioners who joined the business 20 years ago are now looking for people to bring in to support the retail growth of their business.”

Specsavers stores are owned and run by joint optician ventures or franchise partners – there are more than 1,300 partners in the UK and Europe. The retailer has 603 stores in the UK and 32 in the Republic of Ireland. Internationally, it has stores across the Netherlands, Scandinavia, Spain and Australia.
