Symbol group Spar has bought 11 former Somerfield stores, following the Co-operative Group’s acquisition.

The retailer will convert the stores to its Eurospar format. The shops range from 5,000 sq ft to 10,000 sq ft, and Eurospar differs to Spar in that basket spend is higher to accommodate a bigger family weekly shop alongside a traditional convenience store.

Spar managing director Jerry Marwood said: “The purchase of the Somerfield stores is a big opportunity for us. As a collection of well funded private businesses Spar is ideally placed to take advantage of the changes happening in our market place. Along with Somerfield stores we have also voiced our interest in individual Woolworths stores.”
